Point 1- Use bamboo canes for large hedge trimming in Glanmire
When you are shaping a large hedge, using bamboo canes is the way to go for. You should push two canes into the soil at any of the ends. Then, tie them to the shorter canes at a 450 angle, pointing away from the hedge. This is to stop the upright canes from moving inwards. Next, you will need to tie more string above the hedge in order to obtain a straight side. Tie another one about 1 centimetre below the height where you want the hedge to remain. Beech Hedges– You should cut them in August. This is to ensure that no bare patches arise through the winter
Laurel Hedges– You should cut them in the spring season if you want to reshape them. If you want to maintain, cut in every July or August.
Pivot Hedges– Prune them in April and cut them between May and August. Every time you do so, they will get denser and will become easier for you to maintain.
Hawthorn hedges – Cut them in June after they are flowered. You can do so again in autumn if you want to give them a neater look.
Point 3- Watch out for wildlife
Several Wildlife and Countryside Regulations consider it an offence to destroy or damage a wild bird’s nest intentionally, while it is in use or being built. Therefore, while using a hedge trimmer, be careful not to cause any damage to a bird’s nest in your hedge. This is the reason why bird conservation organizations prescribe against the use of hedge trimmers during the primary breeding season for nesting birds- which is during March and August in the UK.
Point 4- Do away with clippings
After you are done with trimming, do not forget to do away with your clippings in a proper manner. Clippings may create airless and damp conditions that facilitate the breeding of fungal diseases in your hedge. To get rid of the clippings, you should spread a plastic sheet around the bush (to catch the clippings). Once the work is finished, brush the loose twigs from the top. Anything leftover can be put through a garden shredder.
